Summary of the AGROREWOLUCJE program - effects of treatments in rape, wheat, and corn cultivation
The first edition of the AGROREWOLUCJE program just ended. In the episodes of this series, experts from CIECH Sarzyna, Grupa Azoty, and INTERMAG, Poland's leading suppliers of modern technologies for agriculture, helped three farms improve their productivity and profits. In the August episodes, Anna and Grzegorz Bardowski, known from the “Farmer Wants a Wife” series, checked the outcomes of the harvest for Piotr and Paweł Mełgieś and David and Martyna Szwajc. The very good results they achieved confirmed that the farms completed the AGROREVOLUCJE series with great success, which will greatly support their future development. On the other hand, in the last, autumn episode, the results of corn harvest in Jarosław Jankowski's farm were summarized.
The AGROREWOLUCJE series has from the very beginning enjoyed great interest of the audience. Dozens of farms applied to participate, from which Internet users and experts jointly selected the final three - the Mełgieś brothers, the Szwajc family, and the Jankowski family. The audience had the opportunity to get to know the daily life of the farmers and their families and to look at the problems they had with their crops. The aim of the program was to improve the productivity and profits of the farms by supporting their owners in comprehensive planning of the cultivation technology and assisting them in running their plantations. Three Polish companies provided the expert knowledge for the program: CIECH Sarzyna, the largest Polish producer of plant protection products; Grupa Azoty, the second largest producer of nitrogenous and multicomponent fertilizers in the European Union; and INTERMAG, one of the largest producers of foliar fertilizers and biostimulators in Europe.
In 2018, before the AGROREWOLUCJE series, Dawid and Martyna Szwajc had an exceptionally unsuccessful harvest. They harvested an average of about 1.5 t/ha of rape, which is much worse than the national average. The initial situation was quite difficult due to the condition of the soil, with nutrients deficiency due to the lack of appropriate fertilization in previous years and the failure to apply proper crop rotation on the farm. As a result, the club root disease appeared. The experts first examined the soil and selected the appropriate pre-sowing fertilizer to make up for the deficiency. Then they chose a suitable variety of rape for sowing, which was resistant to the club root disease. Although it seemed that very low freezing temperatures would have a bad effect on the crops, thanks to the fungicide protection with Tarcza® Łan Extra 250 EW and micronutrient fertilizers, the plantation survived the winter very well.
The biggest challenge during the vegetation period was the drought - low rainfall in early spring and drought in June and July. However, thanks to properly selected fertilizers, bio-stimulators, and plant protection products, the plantation was less sensitive to weather conditions. Despite the fact that the 2018/2019 season was very difficult and the agro-meteorological conditions were not favorable to plants, the yield of the farm more than doubled: David and Martyna harvested an average of 3.8 t/ha of rape!
In the case of the Mełgieś brothers, on the other hand, the greatest challenge in wheat cultivation was to regulate the pH reaction of the soil. Bringing about an increase in the pH of the soil was the basis and absolute priority. After applying fertilizer lime, the experts made sure to balance the fertilization. In order to supplement the nutrients in the soil, nitrogen fertilizers and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers were used. Also, herbicide, fungicide, and canopy structure control treatments were performed at the proper times.
The Lublin region suffered a drought, like the farm of Dawid and Martyna, which made the season very difficult. However, as the yield shows, a well-thought-out crop management strategy makes it possible to achieve a good yield, even under unfavorable weather conditions. With the help of experts and the right means of agricultural production, the brothers managed to increase the yield from 5.1 t/ha in 2018 to 7.5 t/ha!
The last farm in the program tested solutions dedicated to corn. First of all, the soil was examined and, due to its great diversity, the decision was made to even out its pH. For herbicide protection, the farmers used a composition of three CIECH Sarzyna products: Tezosar® 500 SC, Juzan 100 SC, and Nikosar® 060 OD, i.e. a combination of three active substances - terbothylazine, mesotrione, and nicosulfuron; as a result both monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weeds were suppressed. The Tezosar® 500 SC product protected the plantation for the next 8 weeks - a crucial period of corn growth, so that the crop did not have to compete with weeds for water and nutrients that were difficult to access.
Unfortunately, due to the drought that affected the region in June and July (key periods for corn cultivation), it was not possible to obtain satisfactory yields. The yield obtained was 3.5 tons/ha and the recognized drought damage in the Jankowskis’ farm was as high as 40%.Although the yield was below average, the technology used will pay off in the years to come, as the soil has been fed with the right nutrients, which provides a good basis for subsequent crops.
The fourteen-episode series covered a full year, from the 2018 harvest to the 2019 harvest. This gave the audience an opportunity to see the work of farmers and experts throughout the season and to see how, thanks to appropriate agrotechnical measures, the productivity of farms can increase and the crops can become more resistant to unfavorable external conditions.
