Cornflower (CENTAUREA CYANUS)

Botanics concludes that the cornflower is a summer, annual plant. It winters well. Emergence recorded in the autumn and spring, but, under favourable conditions, it also grows in wintertime. Very competitive against the crop. Has a large appetite for water as well as nutrients from the soil. It occurs typically among cereals, in particular winter cereals – to a lesser extent among other plants. It prefers light and moderate solis of a medium acidification level, but it can actually grow in soils of various types. Individual plants may reach about 90 cm.

The cornflower develops blue and violet flowers between June and October. It is valued in herbal medicine and as a component of natural cosmetic products. It is effectively controlled by herbicides. Spraying is recommended with such active agents as bentazone, tribenuron methyl or clopyralid.
